Rose and maple
Butterfly Stools,Maple wood - The Museum of Modern Art - 153.1958.1-2
The material used is rosewood-faced 5-ply plywood[Cf]. The Butterfly Stool has been made in other materials, too, as illustrated by the one made in maple wood in 1956. Rosewood and maple wood share a similar degree of hardness, which is why they belong to those types of wood primarily used for making high-quality furniture, but they differ in color. Due to economic growth after World War II, there was an increase in customer demands for posh furniture, which led to rosewood being used for this design.
