Step 8 of 8
Shwedagon Pagoda
The area of the Shwedagon Pagoda is naturally too vast to explore every pavilion and shrine in detail. As a result, this was only a glimpse of the diverse, changing and extensive grounds of the Shwedagon Pagoda. The various buildings are as multifaceted as the stories, among other things featuring the hairs of Gautama Buddha, the Nats or the Chinthe, that are told about this site. In particular the Nats and the Planetary Station show how deeply pre-Buddhist elements are embedded in the everyday life of the people of Myanmar. Moreover, the significance of the pagoda for the country is not only of a religious nature, it is also as a stage political activism closely linked to the independence movement.
