Behind Hannah is Julie. As you can see, she is wearing a life jacket. While rowing, some rowers wear it because it’s hard to orientate under water when you see very little or nothing at all. Blind people can’t distinguish the surface from the bottom.

The life jacket is smaller than a regular one, because a regular one would be in the way while making the rowing movement. The jacket can be so small because it fills itself with air when it reacts to water. Julie doesn’t really need the life jacket, but she agreed to wear it to demonstrate it. The LSBSNational Foundation for Blind and Visually Impaired donated the life jackets to Rowing Blind.
