The Atlantic Wall
- Atlantic Wall Bunker on the Morsweg
It seems odd to place a bunker in an urban residential area, but that was done entirely on purpose! This bunker is part of the Atlantic Wall, the German defense line that was built on the west coast of Europe, from Norway all the way to the north of Spain. The Atlantic Wall did not always run exactly along the coast. It went a bit inland on several occasions to form a network of communication bunkers. This bunker at the Morsweg housed the local call center and substation for the freie Küste between Scheveningen and Katwijk.
Unfortunately, this bunker in Leiden cannot be viewed from the inside, but there are many Atlantic Wall Bunkers in the Netherlands that can be. Some of them are currently being rebuilt as museums. Especially along the coast there are quite a few bunkers to visit; in Hoek van Holland, Noordwijk, Scheveningen and Groede. It’s worth the trip!
