Borders and History Mapped Out

This map only depicts a plan for border changes in 1920 that affected the Transvaal neighborhood in Leiden, amongst others, but if you zoom in like we have done in these steps, you can discover many more old and new borders in and outside of Leiden.

The physical border changes that took place during the 19th and 20th century have had all kinds of consequences. The Transvaal neighborhood was gradually integrated into Leiden, and as such, the area transformed from rural residences belonging to Oegstgeest, to an urbanized neighborhood of Leiden. Physically or socially, lawfully or not, all of the different borders that this city has seen, have contributed to the history of the Transvaal neighborhood in Leiden.
