Map of Leiden’s Borders
Map showing the prospective change in borders of the town of Oegstgeest, leading up to its annexation by Leiden in 1920. The map comes from the municipal archive of Oegstgeest, Erfgoed Leiden en Omstreken.
At the end of the 19th century, Leiden was growing more than it could handle. In order to facilitate further growth, the city went looking past its boundaries to the neighboring municipalities, among which Oegstgeest. By means of annexation, Leiden took over part of the territory belonging to Oegstgeest.
