The Makara through the elements
Pendants have a long history of providing protection and containing mystical properties. The Makara pendant, with its golden glow, meticulous design, and ferocious image, is unlike any other. Commissioned by a naval officer and forged in the 1600s by an Indian goldsmith, it shows the travel and exchange between continents.
The Makara's role as guardian of pathways and as vahanas, a vehicle of Hindu gods, makes a perfect protector against any threats. As it evokes the power of its namesake, its voyage through this story departs from the element of Earth, the materials, to its mystical, otherworldly properties and its passage through time.
A story by Giulietta Pastorino Verastegui. As part of The Visual and Material Culture of Exchange in Asia and Europe, 1500-1800 at Leiden University, Faculty of Humanities. Supervised by Anne Gerritsen.
