Deer antler comb

The deer antler comb originates from the 6th century AD. It was found in an artificial dwelling mound (known in Dutch as a terp) in Loppersum, the Netherlands.

The combination of sturdy material and favorable soil conditions allowed for this richly decorated comb to look quite good for its 1500 years. Unlike most organic materials, antlers (and types of bone in general) can withstand the ravages of time rather well, especially in areas where the soil is free of air and a little moist.
