Step 3 of 5
February 18, 1869
Johanna is the fourth recorded patient on this page. She was admitted on 18 February 1869, and was allowed to leave a few days later.
We know that she led a wandering existence in Amsterdam. On several occasions, she was found guilty of various crimes such as vagrancy, begging, and even theft. To make ends meet, Johanna worked as a "public woman", a derogatory name for a prostitute. This profession held many dangers for women at the end of the nineteenth century. Not only from violence, quarrels, and mistreatment but also from disease. For a public woman, the risk of an STD was especially high.
