Sangeori explained step by step

  • Shaman ritual bells

Shamanism knows many different rituals with different purposes. Though the rituals have some basic steps in common, there are slight differences. One of these rituals is the Sangeori ritual.

Sangeori is a Korean shaman ritual in which the shaman calls on the mountains from the birthplace of the guests’ grandparents to be able to give advice and tell the guests’ fortune. In most shaman rituals, one shaman is present: usually a woman. The shaman carries out the most important part of the ritual, which is calling upon the spirits. Besides the shaman, usually, one or two assistants are present to play instruments or to hand the shaman her utensils.

The ritual begins with the shaman and her assistants making music by using specific instruments such as the shaman's bells and drums. The shaman starts dancing to the music in order to get into a trance to be possessed by the spirits she is calling upon. Once possessed, she will let the spirit talk to her clients through her. The spirit will give her clients advice and tell their future. The spirits also bring the clients good luck.

As the rituals differ slightly and the purposes vary, clients all go home with different experiences. However, the outcome is usually positive, as some type of negative energy or problem is almost always solved.
