Game counters were often decorated with heraldic motifs or monograms. So were sets of porcelain vessels.[Kroes 2007] This particular plaque shows the same coat of arms that also appears on plates in a set of dinnerware, which was also made in China. They were produced for Cornelis Schipper (?-1737), who served the Dutch East India Company medical master and was in Guangzhou around 1733, the date that appears on both objects.[Campen & Hartkamp-Jonxis 2011, p 75-8] The decorations show the heraldic and names of Schipper and his new wife at the center and, as stated in the first marker, this is surrounded by four images of shaking hands on the rim - it was probably a symbol of their marriage.
