In South China, maritime material culture forms an important constituent of cultural identity and local heritage. Corals, shells and pearls play a role in the everyday ecologies of coastal inhabitants and have been attributed with a variety of financial, social and artistic values.
In addition, artfully crafted ocean objects from the region have become meaningful souvenirs for visitors from all over the world. In this zone Anna Grasskamp follows maritime material culture from Southern China through the ages and across the globe.
