Missing Parts
If you compare this coin with both modern coins and those minted by the Romans, something is clearly missing. Do you see what we mean? Besides there being no portrait of the man being honored (Pompey), there is also no name on this coin, neither of the honouree nor of the mint master, Faustus Sulla. However, a near identical coin is known that does depict the mint master's monogram (see image).
It is clear that Faustus believed that Pompey's fame was such that anyone looking at the coin would immediately recognize from the iconography who was being honored. Pompey truly had a "face" of power, even when it wasn't explicitly shown. Adding his own name would only distract from its message.
