Slendang
These cloths have half the width (approx. 60 cm) and the same length as the kain pandjang (approx. 250 cm). They are used as slings to transport children or other items (fig. 16). In Sumatra they are sometimes used as headscarves. Because slendangs are often used to carry children, these slings have traditionally been inextricably linked to mysticism.
For example, until the first half of the twentieth century it was customary in certain circles to order a slendang, or if possible the batik itself, in honor of the birth of a child. The slendang would then be loaded with symbols that serve as prayers for the child. Some examples of this are symbols for good health, others are there to wish the child prosperity and happiness in life.
