Tie before Dye

Step number three. The small circles of gathered fabric will remain undyed. They are covered in dried banana leaf and tied into little knots to protect these areas from any colour. This would have taken a lot of time and attention to detail to ensure that the dye would get past the tiny bundles of banana leaves. And this is even before someone wrote tiny notes on the knots themselves!

The tiny hooks on top of the object may remain from when these items were displayed in the museum - perhaps hung in a cabinet, or on nails against a wall. Notice how they would have hung upside down rather than the way they are drawn in the illustration.
