Step 4 of 16

Folded

The cloths show many signs of old age. They have been stored away folded, so the wax in the folds has broken. The folds are still very visible, even though they have been kept flat and unfolded in recent years. There are also dark strokes across the width and length of the cloth, which might indicate discoloration from light or smoke. Perhaps this cloth hung or lay in the factory or laboratory for Louis to regularly look at. Maybe it was used as a reference to the origins of their own product, the imitation batik, or maybe instead it had been stowed away in a closet, folded with this side up. Sadly, we will never know exactly how these cloths were kept.
