When lighting votive candles, many Catholics turn towards saints. The votive candles usually burn before statues of one of these saints. Saints play a big role in Catholicism, as they create a connection between heaven and earth. Their past actions and piety are a source of admiration, and Catholics commonly feel a form of brotherly or sisterly love for them. Their lives can be seen as an example to live by and inspire Catholics all over the world.

Thus, praying to them can be seen as a sign of respect. Additionally, the saints can possibly help strengthen a prayer. Since saints are affiliated with different groups and causes, addressing a certain saint in a certain prayer can be very useful. Saint Anthony, for instance, is known to help find back what is lost. Saint Christoffel is the patron saint of travelers, and Saint Francis of nature. Nonetheless, Mary is by far the most popular among the saints. It is in front of her statue that most Catholics light a votive candle.
