Blue Zones
Verhalen over welzijn
Leiden University, Faculty of Humanities
Health is much so more than visiting a doctor. Our well-being is also determined by rituals, knowledge by experience, societal structures. Burning a candle, talking to fellow patients, building a playground: people work on their well-being in all kinds of ways. Consciously and unconsciously, with and without professionals, alone or together.
The stories in this zone show what people consider to be relevant for their well-being, as an alternative or in addition to a strict medical perspective on health. Focusing on (historical) objects, the stories show how citizens have worked on their well-being or the well-being of others. Those objects are located in blue zones, places that offer a surprising perspective on health and disease.
With the cooperation of students and citizens, the Blue Zones produce (historical) knowledge that contributes to a better understanding of well-being and stimulates stories that the doctor does not always hear.
