Commemorative medallion
During his life, Bilderdijk became a celebrity, around whom all kinds of ‘fan culture’ arose. In 1820, for example, a registration list was distributed for this commemorative medallion with Bilderdijk's image on it. On the back is a laurel wreath with the text: ‘Micat-inter-omnes 1821’ (‘He shines above all 1821’).
There was overwhelming interest. In Amsterdam alone there were more than a hundred people interested in a bronze medallion, and fifteen in a silver one. A gold copy of the proceeds was eventually handed over to Bilderdijk. The poet himself thought of it: ‘Such vanity!’
