Bust by Royer
The Fleming Louis Royer (1793-1868), who gained fame with his busts of people in Dutch history, also portrayed Bilderdijk. He based his bust on, among other things, Bilderdijk's death portrait and his death mask. The statue shows the poet with the characteristic ‘twist’ around the head, which gives the poet an oriental appearance. Afterwards, small copies of the bust were also produced. Moreover, the image was printed many times, so that it is now one of Bilderdijk's best-known portraits.
