Nabataean script does not write vowels, but based on our knowledge of other kinds of Aramaic and of Arabic, we can make educated guesses on which vowels to read. The first word was probably pronounced ʾelāhat and means ‘the goddess of’. The resemblance of this Aramaic word to the Arabic words ʾilāh ‘god’ and ʾilāhah ‘goddess’ is clear, as is the relationship to the divine names Allāh and Allāt. Less obviously, it is related to words for ‘god(dess)’ in other Semitic languages, like Hebrew ʾĕlōhīm and ʾēl.
