Step 5 of 10

Veggies

Vegetables! An important part of most diets, also at Deir el-Medina. Our writer used this sign, in the shape of a little plant, to denote the delivery of units of vegetables to the settlement. They would have included lettuce, beans, lentils, cucumbers, onions and garlic. Here, our writer indicates that on day twelve, the crew received eight units, perhaps sacks, of vegetables.

We now have a sense of how our writer noted down the deliveries. But, as we know from hieratic documents from Deir el-Medina, each day a different workman stayed at the settlement to bring the deliveries into the little village. In the next step, we will find out how our writer was able to record the workmen on duty without writing out their names.
