Step 4 of 7

Being precise

Roman tombstones of children tend to specify their age not only in years, but also in months or even days. This boy died at the age of two years (ANNIS II) and four months (MENSIBUS IIII).

The Roman digits from one to four are probably symbols of fingers. The number V (five) symbolizes a full hand, X (ten) two hands: two V's with one written upside down. Number four can be written in two ways: IV (five minus one) or IIII as here. The latter is more common.

After this important, but factual information, the tombstone changes its tune.
