Who is this?
Let us now focus on the hieroglyphic text. There is only a little bit of text written on this stela, in two columns: one horizontally above the two figures and their dogs, and one vertical column on the left. We read the text from right to left: living creatures always face towards the beginning of the line. So we start at the top right corner, here. Do you recognize the god mentioned here? His name is written iconographically.
It’s Anubis! Anubis, the god who accompanies the dead to the underworld, is often depicted as a jackal, just like we see here. The stela is dedicated to him.
The whole text reads:
An offering which the king gives to Anubis, who is atop his mountain, who is inside the embalming place, lord of the sacred land, in all his good and pure places, an invocation offering of bread and beer for the revered one.
