Step 6 of 10

Adorning life or death

This is the lotus-clasp on the other side of the necklace. It would be interesting to know whether these clasps were made out of solid material. If so, the construction of the necklace would be strong enough to be worn by the living. However, if these clasps were made out of thin sheets and thus hollow, the construction would break while wearing it. Therefore, the clasps could hint as to whether this necklace was actually worn by a living person or, for instance, only made for a funerary setting.See: Clark, Charlotte R. ‘Egyptian Granular Jewelry’.
