A Complete Circle
Chan Po-fung’s design introduces an alternative to traditional methods of repair and reuse. It accepts the brokenness of the jade bracelet by completing and simultaneously framing it through the addition of brass elements.
In this work, Chan reassembles a broken bracelet not by using traditional restoration methods for jade, but through the help of a brass frame that puts the bangle fragments in a type of tab setting known as turtle setting. Chan has continued to experiment with broken jade bangles.
By taking part in different community art projects, Chan seeks the connection between craftsmanship and community. The different parts of his piece I would still find you also reflect on social interaction and relationships. Both halves of the piece can be worn independently by two different people. Only when they reunite, can the bracelet become a fully complete circle again.
