Step 3 of 5
Ars Aemula Naturae
We’re at the first floor of Ars Aemula Naturae, one of the oldest societies for the visual arts right at the heart of Leiden. It used to be a home, before it was turned into an academy. The oldest part dates from 1620, but the long extension where our wall is situated, was added later.
The wall was created ca. 1653. Many students came to get their art supplies here, from the closets that are built into the wall. Can you imagine? After the renovation of this unique building, the work space went into retirement, allowing us to take our time while observing the marble up close.
