The fragment consists of at least two layers of paint, white on grey. The have either been applied as a block print, or painted by hand.

The faux-marbled wallpaper was kept safe during building history research carried out as part of the renovation of an historical building. We often find similar wallpapers in closets, corridors and lesser used spaces, most likely because the wallpaper in these spaces were replaced less frequently. This in stark contrast to the living room where the wallpaper was frequently adapted to suit the latest fashion, or was damaged much easier by soot and smoke. A wallpaper expert dated this wallpaper, based on the imitation and color, around 1850. This date is in line with the general history of Leiden. After a period of economic standstill and even decline , a period of prosperity begins halfway through the 19th century. Steps are taken to improve and rebuild the city center, often including a policy of separation with stores on the down floor and living space on the upper floor.

The new upstairs apartment could then be equipped with the latest interior finishes. It’s likely that our wallpaper was applied as an attractive, tasteful, and fashionable wall decoration during one of those upgrades.

After the artificial marble, we can finally turn our attention to what IS real in this beautiful space. Or…
