Everything points to the conclusion that 19th century creators tried really hard to give this coconut goblet a 16th century ‘look’. That they succeeded quite well, is proven by the enthusiasm of the museum director when he bought the piece in 1969 – but found out soon after that he was dealing with a much younger work. And yet, it wouldn’t be fair to call this goblet fake or forgery. Rather, it’s an example of ‘historicization’, a widespread and beloved phenomenon during the 19th century.
