A doll and a brush

The daruma doll was bought in the Netherlands, but actually originates from Japan, whereas the calligraphy brush was bought in China and brought to the Netherlands. The PhD-student who owns it uses it to continue the hobby he practiced as a kid: calligraphy. What do these objects tell us about their owner?
