Very typical for this type of fan is the usage of slats made of bamboo that spread out. The construction takes practice and the paper used for these fans, called hanji, was made by hand. Nowadays the paper used for these fans is still handmade to keep it as traditional as possible, as this was the only type of paper available at the time these fans were most used. It is a craft currently practiced only by a handful of people. But these paper fans have an ancient history, as the first folding fan dates all the way back to the end of the Goryeo dynasty (918 - 1392).
