The white color of the most well-known type of Lucky Cat is associated with the beckoning of luck, linking back to the cat’s origin story. However, with the rise of its popularity and the increasing demand, the product has also started to diversify. Nowadays, the cat can be found in numerous colors. Red Lucky Cats, for instance, protect the owner from disease and calamity; whereas the pink version is associated with romantic success.[1] Green cats are said to be helpful in excelling at academics.
The colors of the cat thus represent different blessings for the owner. However, not all colors are clearly defined: for instance, some owners believe the black cat helps fend off evil spirits, whereas others see black cats as bringers of bad luck.[2]
Our cat, exhibited here, shows off a gold color. This color is associated with bringing in wealth, and is thus very popular among business owners. These cats are often found in Chinese restaurants in the Netherlands, and it is time we turn our attention to the Lucky Cats and their relationship to China.
