Step 3 of 3

Difference in Visual Perception

The two different viewers could potentially find themselves in a situation without the possibility of agreement once they notice themselves not interpreting the painting in the same way. The English speaker has the potential to be taken far more by the direction of Van Gogh’s brush strokes, which are incredibly deliberate for those who perceive color similar to himself. However, the linguistic difference in Russian could result in the Russian speaker finding it difficult to focus on Van Gogh’s strokes, instead focusing on just how all the various different shades of blue interact, play, and conflict with each other in the various parts of the painting.

The perceived interaction of color can be said to be parallel to the way language affects the speaker. Depending on one’s language, the world looks just a little bit different, be it culturally, linguistically, or visually. There is no denying that language plays an incredibly important role in any person’s life.
