Scientifically genuine

The decoration on this shield is corroded similarly to the rest of the shield. While contemporary forgers are able to add corrosion, such skills seem beyond the capacities available prior to 1943 when the shield was bought.

We are thus left with a shield that some art historians have deemed suspect but which from a scientific point of view seems genuine.
