This is an eagle sitting on top of a globe and an anchor - the symbol of the US Marines (Fig. 8). For many, the Zippo is closely connected to the US military.

Zippo was not selling particularly well in the beginning, but this situation changed when the military decided to use the Zippo during the war. On the front lines, the American military found the Zippo useful for its soldiers: not only was it highly durable, it was also windproof and could be refilled. Upon America’s entry into WWII in 1941, Zippo stopped producing lighters for the consumer market and produced only for the US military.
