My grandmother’s legacy

  • A life on a table

As well as the Ancient Egypt-inspired fabric, this silver ring with blood coral inlays of my grandmother’s was passed down to me. When I spoke about the ring with my mother, she casually mentioned that it could very well have been the only thing of value her father ever gave to her mother. I can’t help but add “besides you and your brothers that is”.

I am not one for buying jewelry because when I was a student, my collection was stolen from my apartment. Nevertheless, I enjoy wearing this ring, not only because it fits my fingers well, but because it helps me put my own worries into perspective considering my grandmother did not have an easy life (being a farmer’s wife during the first half of the twentieth century), but she got through it. Also, she brought up my mother, who in turn raised me to be the person I am today.

In short, this story is in loving memory of my grandmother who sadly passed away in 1995 before I could properly get to know her. She influenced my life in ways neither of us could have foreseen.
