A White Horse on a Hill: From Uffington to Rohan

In the creation of his Middle-earth setting, J.R.R. Tolkien took inspiration from medieval England. For Rohan, home of the Horse-lords, the Uffington White Horse of Oxfordshire is a solid candidate to have been of influence. But what was the function of this chalk figure from the Late Bronze Age?
