A White Horse on a Hill: From Uffington to Rohan

In the creation of his Middle-earth setting, J.R.R. Tolkien took inspiration from medieval England. For Rohan, home of the Horse-lords, the Uffington White Horse of Oxfordshire is a solid candidate to have been of influence. But what was the function of this chalk figure from the Late Bronze Age? And what does it have to do with Rohan beyond its image alone?
