The pipa likely came to China from Central Asia via the Tarim Basin and the Buddhist kingdom of Kucha. This contested region, which at different times formed part of various Chinese empires and is now located in Xinjiang province, is where the pipa in its most familiar form was adopted. As a place of intersection where the trade routes that linked East and West met those travelling north from India, this region formed a cultural crossroads and a vibrant multicultural community.
