The label usually contained a logo or weapon, but sometimes it also contained an image. The images are often idyllic depictions of the wearers, producers and sellers of batik. The European designers based their drawings on black-and-white photographs of famous photographers such as Woodbury & Page. These pictures were usually staged, but were seen as a window into the true ‘Far East’ in Europe at the time.
On the pages from the sample book here you see some of the labels that came attached with the letters. A batiker at work, a seller with a typically Chinese hair-do and clothing, and a man that tries to tame his prancing horse.
