Entering the trading port of Canton was not an easy task. To be permitted upriver, ships had to have cargo that was for sale and ready to trade. Foreign women were not allowed to enter Canton and foreign officers were restricted to a small area at the edge of the city. This area was located along the river and was bordered by the Thirteen Hong Street to the north. In fact, the district and the buildings were also called the Thirteen Hongs, even though there were more than thirteen. The next section will explore the Hongs in depth.[cf]
