Architectural Style

The foreign factory buildings display a fusion of southern Chinese and Western architectural styles. Western elements that were attached to the basic structure of Chinese buildings include recessed verandahs, westernized façades, roofed balconies, end gables, balustrades and window caps.[[cf These features show the spread and influence of Western architecture in Canton. The westernization of the buildings also illustrates the shift in management or ownership of blocks from Chinese to foreigners.
