Meet Napoleon Bonaparte as he really was. This miniature portrait of the man is executed in watercolor on ivory and contrasts strongly with some of the better known images of the French general-turned-emperor (fig. 1). Rather than a common souvenir, this little box is closely connected to the man in the image. Let’s have a look at the details that connect this ornate little thing to Elba, Saint Helena, and Switzerland.
