Surrounding the miniature portrait of Napoleon in the four corners are large inset diamonds surrounded by laurel leaves. The laurel leaves are a classical symbol of triumph and refer to the bay leaf gold crown that Napoleon wore at his coronation (fig 3). But it is not the only floral pattern on the box.
