Lotuses breaking the waters

Lotus and Water Lily Festival - 2018

As we turn to the darker green areas of this plaque, we see something forcing the plaque out of its perfect double gourd shape, forming undulations on the mother gourd. What is it, and why is it trying to breach the gourd?

They are lotuses and lotuses are always good news. The lotus appears to break the mother's waters, but also appears to symbolize something once again.

The lotus comes out of the mire but is not itself sullied. It is inwardly empty, outwardly upright. It has no branches but it smells sweet. It is the symbol of purity.

In order to take it to the next level, the artisans did not only paint the lotus' leaves, but also its buds. This combination symbolizes complete union. Although the flowers are formed in the shape of the ones that grow on the vines of the gourd, its colour resembles the pink of a lotus.

The question remains: why does the lotus want to deliver the inside of the plaque to the outside world, to us?
