Step 4 of 10

Courage and loyalty

On the gilded drinking edge around the nut we see garlands, flowers and crossed keys have been added, with below them the text:

"AENDENCKINGE VAN DE MOET EN TROUHW VAN DE BURGHEREREN VAN LIJDEN IN DE JAERE 1574"

(In memory of the courage and loyalty of the people of Lijden in the year of 1574)

This is a direct reference to the year where Leiden was occupied under the command of Spanish King Phillip II. Despite the high death rate and widespread starvation, the city wouldn’t yield. Enabling William of Orange and his army of ‘geuzen’ (Calivinist Dutch Nobles) to liberate the city on October 3rd, 1574,. Does this mean we are dealing with a goblet made during the turn of the century?
