12/3/2021 9:23:18 AM PROSPECT
The PROSPECT project is based on the assumption that prostitution is visible in the urban landscape. It argues that prostitution is visible not only through the display of women and men’s body but also through its influence on various aspects of the development of modern cities: on their economy, sanitary evolution, social composition, consumer and leisure identity, policing, spatial use of the urban environment (both outside on the streets and inside private houses), and even on the sounds and lighting of certain areas. Thanks to the Research Traineeship Programme from Leiden University, MA students Remko Prins and Emma Verweij have taken an active part in selecting and analyzing different types of sources, and this zone is the result of their work. -

11/9/2021 7:03:54 AM Starting anew
By surrounding ourselves with things, we humans have found a way to come to terms with life. The things we relate to are able to tell stories about ourselves that we sometimes do not know how to tell. We cherish memories by holding on to heirlooms, we bury valuables in our backyard or burn gifts given by a hurtful ex; we keep photos of loved ones in an album stored in the attic, we display children’s drawings on the refrigerator. We can pass things on from generation to generation, or choose to let go of objects. But what if you are forced to leave everything you have behind, from one moment to another? -

7/12/2021 3:27:20 PM Culture on the Move
In a nutshell, cultural translation refers to processes in which the meanings and materiality of texts, things, or practices transform when transferred to different cultural contexts. As a field, it is highly inter- or multidisciplinary, not in the least because the term itself can denote either a ‘culturally informed’ type of translation, or the ‘translation/transfer’ of culture or cultural forms themselves. In addition, it can refer to the transformation of all types of cultural expressions; those that can be transferred in time, in space or from one medium to another by a wide variety of ‘translators’. -

7/3/2021 1:06:32 PM Transcultural objects
Human beings desire beautiful things, and when those things come from far away, they become even more desirable. Unsurprisingly, then, today’s museum collections are full of objects that have travelled long distances to satisfy the desires of human beings. But it wasn’t just objects that travelled: materials, design ideas, and technologies also travelled, especially within regions and during periods in which contacts intensified. The objects that emerge from the exchange between Asia and Europe we call ‘transcultural objects’. -
