Storyline
Enslaved at an engenho
Because the artist, Frans Post, provided a very detailed description in a legend next to the image, we can learn a lot about the activities of enslaved workers on seventeenth-century plantations.
It becomes clear that the labor on the sugar mill was very gendered. The men did not do the heavier work, but their work was more dangerous.
