Indonesian Influences on Dutch Cans

This label for canned nasi was issued in 1966, in honor of the 100-year anniversary of the Leiden canning factory owned by the Nieuwenhuizen family. The family started canning vegetables out of fear of cholera, which afflicted many people in Leiden in the 19th century. But who would have thought that a century later they would be selling canned nasi goreng? By taking a closer look at this label, we will discover the history of the Nieuwenhuizen factory, both in- and outside Leiden.
