Recent studies conducted by Amnesty International Nederland show that 10% of all female students and 1% of male students have experienced sexual penetration without consent. What is striking is that 4 out of 10 students keep quiet after having experienced this. The reason is that people did not see the necessity of sharing or felt ashamed. A smaller number of respondents did not know what to do with the experience, was afraid to get the blame for it, or was not in the mood to tell anyone.
Acts of a sexual nature without consent have been experienced by 31% of female students and 11% of male students. Female students in particular are confronted with sexually transgressive behavior. However, only 5% of the student population is aware of the Leiden University’s confidential advisors, to whom they can report sexual transgression.
