Storyline
Hong Life on a bowl
This Qing punch bowl, which was designed for the American market, illustrates a panorama of the Guangzhou waterfront, a prominent treaty port in China. The buildings standing along the coastline, Hongs, were a multifunctional space for commerce. The vivid graphics give us an insight to the interaction between foreign traders and Chinese commerce authorities in the 18th century.
